SO Derby in the Community

SO Derby - In Service to the Community since 2009!

SO Derby is Southern Oregon’s first and largest skater-run, skater-owned not-for-profit league. As of December 2015, SO Derby has a membership of over 50 skaters in our Adult and Junior Leagues combined, with over 40 volunteers and support staff.  SO Derby has expanded from a women's roller derby league to also include a female youth league and has most recently started a men's team.  Since our inception, we have had the honor to serve the community with thousands of hours of service. In 2016, our primary community initiatives are the Bear Creek Greenway and the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Oregon.

Bear Creek Greenway Beautification

SO Derby sponsors the Bear Creek Greenway between the Lynn Newbury Park in Talent to Blue Heron Park in Phoenix, Oregon. We pick up trash on the Greenway once a month.

Polar Plunge

The Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Oregon is a special event for SO Derby. Since 2011, SO Derby (formerly the Southern Oregon Roller Girls) has raised over $13,000 for Special Olympics Oregon and has consistently been one of the largest plunging groups. In 2011 & again in 2016, SO Derby/SORG was recognized by the Medford Police Department for their special contributions. The plaques presented to us can be viewed at the west side location of Jackson Creek Pizza.

SO Derby also sponsors the Jackson County Special Olympics and has dedicated turn three of our track to all Special Olympics athletes at our home bouts. We are honored to have Special Olympic athletes at our bouts, cheering us on and supporting us as fans. As our thanks, we offer free entrance to all Special Olympics athletes.

Parades

SO Derby participates in a variety of parades throughout the year including the Pear Blossom Parade in Medford, 4th of July Parade in Ashland, the Talent Harvest Festival and the SO Pride Parade in Ashland. Parades are always a lot of fun (on and off skates!) and we look forward to seeing you in the crowd!
